It was established around 25 AD as a major Roman settlement, then called "Ossonoba." It fell to Moorish rule in the 8th Century, and maintained its status as one of the most powerful cities on the Iberian Peninsula. The Moors were conquered in 1249, and Faro became part of Portugal.
Today, Faro is renowned for its unassuming beauty, rich history, blend of cultures, cuisine, and gorgeous beaches.
