Germany Essen
Essen is a city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, on the River Ruhr. It is the 9th-largest city in Germany, and chosen as the European Capitol of Culture in 2010.

Though the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, it was founded around the 1st Century BC, when the Alteburg Castle was built.

Today, Essen is known as the home of the Krupp family iron works, for its historic role in the coal and steel industries, the prescence of giant companies and corportations within the city center, its university and hospital, and its modern architecture.
