Esquipulas is a city in eastern Guatemala, 6 miles from the border of Honduras. It is the second most visited location in the country, due to the traditional pilgrimage that thousands of people undertake a year, in order to worship at its famous church, the Basilica de Esquipulas, and the black statue of Christ inside.

The land was inhabited by the Mayans and other native people on and off since approximately 1000 BC, until the Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1525 and settled the town as a mission.

Today, Esquipulas is known for its strong religious ties, Catholic heritage, church, Black Christ statue, tourism, and fast rate of growth.
