Esperanza Spalding is an American jazz musician. She taught herself to play violin at the age of 4, and by the age of 5 had joined a city orchestra. By the age of 15, she was the orchestra's concertmaster, and had also taught herself to play the cello, guitar, bass, double bass, and to sing. She has won four Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist in 2011, making her the first jazz artist ever to recieve that award. She sings in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
