The town began as a fort, built in 1874. Its first commander was General Philip Sheridan, who named it in honor of his friend Jesse L. Reno. Originally, its name was Reno City, but this caused its mail to frequently get mixed up with that of Reno, Nevada, prompting a name change.
Today, it is known for its frequent torandoes - making it a popular destination for storm chasing, as well as for its historic World War II prisoner of war camp.
