Connections

As a young man, Degas met Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, a painting hero of his, who gave him advice on his work. Degas remembered Ingres' words for the rest of his life. His painting style was heavily influenced by Ingres.

Degas met Edouard Manet in 1864, when both were there copying the same painting at the Louvre. They became friends, and Manet later was one of the primary influences in the shift of Degas' painting from historical to modern scenes.

Though Degas and Claude Monet are often considered obvious contemporaries, they never got along all that well. Degas balked at being called an Impressionist painter, like Monet, and Monet was offended at Degas' rejection of the term. There were often tensions between them.

Degas' circle of friends included Pierre Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassat, Stephane Mallarme, and others.

Degas was an acquaintance of John Singer Sargent, Jean Francois Raffaelli, Jean Louis Forain, George Moore, Walter Sickert, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, and others.
