A small village was founded here in the 16th Century, called Nombre de Dios, which was erroneously believed to be a mining ground for silver. The actual town of Durango was founded on top of Nombre de Dios in 1563 by Francisco de Ibarra, and named after Durango, Spain. In the Spanish Colonial era, the city was the capital of the Nueva Vizcaya area of New Spain.
Today, Durango is known for its eclectic architecture, cathedral, Baroque palace, history, annual festival, and European influence and culture.
