It was established in 1881 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Co. to help with the transportation needs of nearby mining projects. The town is named after Durango, Mexico, which is in turn named after Durango, Spain.
Today, the town is known for its mix of European and South American-influenced architecture, mountains, archaeological sites, Native American history, and historic basketmaking. It is a noted location for fishing, rafting, hiking, and mountain biking.
