There was an early Roman settlement here in the 3rd Century BC, though there is much evidence of earlier, Prehistoric inhabitation as well. In 1420, a small village here (of an unknown founding date) was conquered by the Republic of Venice. It was later ruled by the Austrian and German empires. It was scheduled to be the setting of the 1944 Winter Olympics, but was unable to due to World War II. It instead hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, which brought along a boost in interest and awareness of the town, transforming it into a boutique skiing resort.
Today, Cortina d'Ampezzo is known for its charming downtown, unique mountains, skiing, resorts and hotels, tourism, and other winter sports.
