The city was founded in 38 BC by a Germanic tribe, but taken over and renamed Colonia by the Romans in 50 AD. For a time, Cologne was the capitol of Germania Inferior. During World War II, this was among the most heavily bombed cities in Germany, leaving most of the city destroyed and shrinking its population by a dramatic 95%.
Today, Cologne is known for its wealth of architecture, Roman ruins, and art scene.
