Anthony of Padua: After relocating to the Abbey de Santa Cruz in this city - at the time the Portuguese capital - in 1212, I could finally settle into my intense studies without constant distractions and visits from family and friends. I focused on Theology and Latin, and joined the Franciscan Order and was ordained as a priest. Highly responsible, I was honored with being named guestmaster, in charge of the large abbey's hospitality. In 1221, a small group of Franciscan friars set up a hermitage just outside the city, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Egypt. I was very attracted to their humility and simple way of life, and requested that the abbey allow me to join them. Permission was granted, and I left the abbey to set up a tiny dwelling in the Olivais area of this city. I took the name of "Anthony," which I would be called from that time on. I also became a devoted admirer of the founder of the new Franciscans, Francis of Assisi, and studied his teachings. I was 26 years old. In 1222, at the age of 27, I requested to be sent as a missionary to Morocco, and so set off on the journey.
