Charles Hector d'Estaing: I fought here in 1758 at the Siege of Madras. Defeat was inevitable, but I advanced alone at the British, most likely with the full expectation that I would be killed. Instead, I was unhorsed and wounded. British forces chose not to kill me, most likely in admiration of my solo charge. I spent six months at a French hospital here, doing my best to refuse offers of parole.
Magnus Carlsen: I traveled here in November of 2013 to compete in the World Chess Championship. I stayed at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Hotel, and during the opening ceremony of the tournament, I read a book to keep me focused. I won, making me the new World Chess Champion. My team threw me into the hotel pool when we got back to our suite.
