Today, it is the 76th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Charleston is known for its sweet southern charm, its dollhouse-like colonial architecture, its environmentalism and greenery, its medical system, southern dining, and the polite, hospitable nature of its inhabitants.

Charleston in People's Lives
Jude Law: I traveled here in 2002 to film scenes of the movie Cold Mountain. We filmed at the College of Charleston.
Liam Neeson: I traveled here in 1987 to film scenes of the movie Satisfaction.
Natalie Portman: I traveled here in 2002 to film scenes of the movie Cold Mountain.
Samuel Morse: I traveled here in 1818, seeking commissioned portraits from the elite high society Southerners of this grand little town. My painting of a local society belle perfectly captured the lavish opulence that this city impressed upon me. I was possibly influenced in my opinion and desire for Charleston from hearing stories about it from Washington Allston, with whom I had recently spent four years studying painting under in London. I liked the city enough to keep a studio here for a short time.
Washington Allston: I lived here briefly in 1800, right after graduating from university and right before deciding to go live abroad.
