An ancient city, Catania was founded as a Greek colony called "Katane," around 730 BC. It experienced a golden age in the Renaissance, when it was a center for Italian economy, politics, culture, and art.
Today, Catania is known as a beautiful Sicilian city, renowned for its downtown area, history throughout ancient, medieval and Renaissance periods, its Roman ruins - particularly the amphitheatre, architecture, university, and location close to the Mount Etna volcano.
