People Born in Capri
Capri in People's Lives
Catrinel Menghia: I visited here in 2014.
Luisa Casati: I lived here for a year, in 1919 - 1920. I was 38 years old at the time, and still a beautiful European socialite, a queen of high fashion and eccentricity. I lived at the luxurious Villa San Michele, which belonged to Alex Munthe. He did not intend me to stay so long, and looked on in despair as me, the visitor, quickly began to take over the house due to my strong will and vivacity. He later described me as "outrageous." While on this island, I hosted and supported a large number of exiled lesbians, gay men, and struggling artists. One of my visitors here was Compton Mackenzie, who documented my time in Capri in his published diaries, and another was Romaine Brooks, who painted me and with whom I had an affair. Munthe was overjoyed to see me go in 1920.
Sienna Miller: I traveled here in 2003, at the age of 22, to pose topless in the Pirrelli Calendar.
