Cairo Montenotte is a town in the region of Liguria in northwestern Italy, located 31 miles west of Genoa. It's name translates roughly to "stone mountain night."

It was established around 10 BC as the site of a handful of wealthy Roman villas, some of which still remain there today.

Today, Cairo Montenotte is known for its villas, Roman ruins, and small town charm.

Francis of Assisi: While traveling to Spain, I passed through here in 1213 and established a convent just outside the town.

Napoleon Bonaparte: I commanded and won my first battle of the Italian Campaigns here in 1796, in the Battle of Montenotte.
