Boulogne sur mer
Boulogne-sur-Mer is a city in northern France, on the English Channel.

It was established by the Romans sometime before the 4th Century, already a major port.

Today, the city is known for its beautiful side-streets and waterfront living, and fishing trade, specifically herring.

Agatha Christie: During my childhood, my family frequently went to stay at our second home here, from around 1895 - 1905.

Henry James: I brieftly lived here around 1857, when I was about 14 years old.

Napoleon Bonaparte: Under threat of war with the British in 1805 despite our Treaty of Amiens, I set up an army camped here ready to invade England if necessary. The troops were given rallying speeches and encouragement, though no invasion ever took place.
