Though it is unclear if there was further settlement, a Roman burial site has been discovered here. A church here has existed since at least the 13th Century.
Today, Bishopsbourne is known for its historic church and cemetary, rolling fields, amateur cricket matches, and as the location of Bourne Park.

Joseph Conrad: I purchased and lived in an English country house called Oswalds here from about 1910. By this time, I was married, had two sons, and was one of the most successful writers of English literature in Britain. Amidst much traveling, I spent most of my time writing. I died here in August of 1924, of a probable heart attack, at the age of 66.
