It was founded in 1680 by a group of Puritan settlers coming from Stamford, Connecticut. The land was purchased by them from a Native American tribe, who had called the land "Hopp Ground." Beginning in 1697, the town was a part of Connecticut, and only became a part of the state of New York in 1700.
Today, Bedford is known as a growing place of luxury and wealth, a popular northeastern retreat for the wealthy and celebrities. It is populated by luxurious mansions, horse stables, and a pictaresque downtown area. It is also very environmental and natural, with a famous tree, the Bedford Oak, being a symbol of the town.
