It was established in the 1840's by Mormon settlers, and was located close to the Santa Fe Trail. Due to disputes and tensions with the Native Americans in the area, the town was inhabited sparsely, and even then, on and off as travelers both left and then re-settled. The town was only permanently established in 1864.
Today, Barstow is known for its proximity to the Mojave Desert, historic trains and mines, and dusty cowboy town feel.
