The town was first mentioned in history in 902, and grew around a castle owned by a wealthy German family, which later passed into Saxon hands. During the Middle Ages, Bamberg was an influential location of power of the Holy Roman Empire as its own seperate diocese.
Today, the town is best known for its charming downtown area, history, gingerbread-like houses, pictaresque beauty, rose gardens, cathedral, locally brewed beer, castle, and rolling hillsides - each crowned in a historic church.
