Connections

Paley was the youngest daughter of renowned surgeon Harvey Cushing.

Through her sister's marriage, Paley was the sister-in-law of Vincent Astor.

Paley's glamorous circle included many high-profile individuals and celebrities. Among her acquaintances and friends were Gloria Guinness, Marella Agnelli, Bill Blass, and C.Z. Guest.

Truman Capote was a close friend of Paley's, and he considered her a muse. However, after she appeared as a weakly disguised characters in Truman's book Answered Prayers, which she felt revealed too much gossip about high society's inner circle, Paley broke off with Capote. The end of their friendship was heavily covered in the news. Truman famously said of her, "Babe had only one fault. She was perfect. Otherwise, she was perfect."

Paley was a close friend of Slim Keith. She and Keith were inspirations for Capote's book Answered Prayers

Paley's met William S. Paley in 1946, shortly after the end of her first marriage. The two fit together well - William S. Paley wanted to gain entrance to the prestigious Manhattan high-society crowd, and his wealth and worldliness appealed to Babe. They married in 1947, and went on to have two children together. However, their relationship was not perfect, and Paley was often lonely and depressed as her husband carried out numerous affairs with other women.
