Antioch was an ancient city in the Greek Empire, located in modern southern Turkey on the Orontes River. It was founded around 400 BC by Seleucus I Nicator. Antioch grew to be one of the most powerful cities in the ancient world, with a formidable military and an advantageously economic location. It was one of the wealthiest cities involved in the spice trade, the Silk Road, and the Persian Royal Road. It was also a pivotal location for the early Christian movement.

During the middle ages, the city fell into disrepair and a fall from grace, mainly due to the fact that trade routes shifted, leaving the city behind and taking its wealth with it. Heavy warfare and a degraded army, no longer able to protect the city, left it uninhabited by the Renaissance.

Today, it is the site of historical ruins, often visited by tourists and archaeologists.
