Connections

While studying in England, Paul met Emmeline Pankhurst and Christabel Pankhurst, the founders of the Women's Social and Political Union and some of Britain's most powerful leaders on the front of women's rights. They were her inspiration to fight for the same.

Paul was a close friend of Lucy Burns, who she met during a march, and was arrested with. Their friendship lasted for decades after the event.

In 1909, Paul and other suffragists attended a speech by Prime Minister H.H. Asquith, but as he began to speak, they threw their shoes at the stained glass windows, and screamed "Votes for women!" All were arrested.

Howard W. Smith was a powerful ally of Paul in her fight for women's rights. He aided Paul in making many political advances for women, most notably in the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
