It was established in 1873 by a clerk, who named the town after his native home of Albany, Georiga.
Today, Albany is known for being the location of the historic Fort Griffin, for its agriculture, Hereford cows, and frontier heritage.

Lottie Deno: I came to Fort Griffin, located outside this town, around 1875, during my years as a notorious gambler. I decided to stay awhile here, as I liked its high population of saloons, heavy gambling, and the rough and tumble element that it had. I lived here until 1877, when I moved with my gambling lover Frank to Kingston, New Mexico.
