It was founded by a Roman consul in 123 BC, and by the 4th Century AD had grown to a large metropolis. During the Middle Ages, it was the capital of Provence. In the 12th Century, already a wealthy and powerful city, it became one of the world's centers of education, culture, and higher learning. Through its history, it has been occupied and controlled by the Romans, Visgoths, Germanic tribes, Franks, Lombards, Saracens, and finally the French beginning in 1487.
Today, Aix en Provence is known as a cultural gem of France, renowned for its architecture, history, elegance, Roman ruins and amphitheater, university, higher education, intellectuality, enormous books statue, downtown area, museums and libraries, and culture.
